Tong Ren Tang’s traditional manual manufacturing techniques for water-based pills have the following characteristics: (i) the pills are manufactured based on the prescription made on a case-by-case basis to meet the patient’s need for customized medicine; (ii) only “premium, pure and authentic” medicinal materials are used for manufacturing of pills; (iii) many complicated processes are used, in particular, medicinal materials of different natures are grinded using different methods, then different kinds of medicinal powder are mixed with appropriate amount of water through various processes such as molding, pushing, pulling, rolling, tossing and throwing, which require expertise and experience of the manufacturing workers; (iv) different processes are adopted based on special requirements of the traditional Chinese medicine prescription to guarantee the uniqueness and efficacy of medicine; and (v) Tong Ren Tang has been following high standards of medicine manufacturing since 1723 when it began to supply medicine to the imperial family.
